Nuclear factor-kB: a friend or a foe in cancer?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nuclear transcription factor NF-kB, initially discovered as a factor in the nucleus of B cells that binds to the enhancer of the kappa light chain of immunoglobulin, has since been shown to be expressed ubiquitously in the cytoplasm of all cell types, conserved from Drosophila to man. It translocates to the nucleus only when activated, where it regulates the expression of over 200 genes that control the immune system, growth, and inflammation. The dysregulation of NF-kB can mediate a wide variety of diseases including cancer. Whether NF-kB activation is beneficial or harmful for cancer is controversial. The development of novel therapeutics targeting NF-kB requires full understanding of its role in pathology and physiology. The current review is an attempt to describe two sides of the NF-kB coin; viz, as a friend and as a foe. # 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Apocrine Metaplasia in Intraductal Papilloma with Foci of DCIS: A Friend or Foe?
Malignant papillary neoplasms of the breast comprise a number of microscopically distinct lesions, where apocrine metaplasia is commonly found in papillomas compared to other papillary lesions including papillary carcinomas. However, association of apocrine metaplasia in papilloma with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) is not very well defined. The lesions with apocrine metaplasia are not only di...
متن کاملElevated serum osteoprotegerin levels in women: friend or foe?
INTRODUCTION osteoprotegerin has emerged as a new candidate for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, high levels of osteoprotegerin have been linked to vascular calcification, an independent and well-defined risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. Thus, the action of osteoprotegerin in these situations has been questioned. OBJECTIVE to evaluate the effect of osteoproteg...
متن کاملIs tumor necrosis factor-α friend or foe for chronic heart failure?
Although detrimental effects of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) have been reported in failing myocardium, clinical trials using TNF-α antagonists did not show the benefit of TNF-α inhibition in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). The double-edged effects of TNF-α/Toll-like receptors (TLRs)-related proinflammatory cytokines and downstream signal transduction, nuclear factor (NF)-κB activa...

IL-15 is a member of the family of IL-2 cytokines. This family of cytokines activates signaling pathways leading to cellular activation, proliferation and survival. IL-15 exhibits broad activity and induces the differentiation and proliferation of NK, T and B cells. Furthermore, IL-15 protects T-effector cells from the action of T Regulatory cells and reverses tolerance to tumor associated anti...
